No fewer than 13 people perish and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant growth of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
