The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
