The former US president’s most recent ultimatum to impose an additional complete levy on Chinese goods has been called a “classic case” of American hypocrisy, per the Chinese government.

A Commerce Ministry spokesperson additionally remarked that the nation could implement its own unspecified “responsive actions” if the American leader carries out his threat, noting that the country was “fearless” of a potential trade war.

This past Friday, Donald Trump retaliated at Beijing’s move to strengthen its policies for exports of critical elements, alleging China of “adopting a confrontational stance” and attempting to hold the international market “hostage”.

Additionally, he threatened to pull out of a scheduled summit with China’s President Xi Jinping, which was expected to take place during a meeting in Seoul in the coming weeks.

His statements on last Friday shook financial markets, with the S&P 500 share index falling by nearly three percent, marking its steepest fall since April.

The president’s words reignited concerns of a trade conflict between the United States and China.

Earlier this year, the respective governments had reached an agreement to drop high import duties on each other’s goods, which had created the possibility of commerce ceasing between the two countries.

Consequently, United States levies on products from China subject to an additional thirty percent tariff compared with the start of the year, while items from the United States entering the Chinese market incur a 10% tariff.

The most recent comments from China – published by the Ministry of Commerce in the form of official answers to media inquiries – echoed rhetoric from the height of the latest commercial tensions.

Officials denounced United States controls on semiconductors and chips while defending Beijing’s export controls on rare earth minerals as “normal actions” to protect state interests and that of the global community.

The spokesperson said that for “many years”, the United States had “expanded the interpretation” of state security, abused foreign shipment regulations and “enforced” unfair treatments against China.

“Turning to” trade levy ultimatums is not the proper method to deal with China,” the spokesperson stated.

“The nation’s view” on a trade conflict has consistently been consistent: we do not want one, but we are fearless of one.”

The previous week, China revealed it was strengthening foreign shipment restrictions on rare earths and further resources vital for high-technology production.

This was seen as a key move, as the country processes about ninety percent of the global rare earth supply, which are employed in items such as photovoltaic modules and handheld devices.

New remarks from the US and China are being interpreted by analysts as a means of enhancing bargaining power ahead of forthcoming discussions.

It is unclear whether a summit between the former president and President Xi, expected at a high-level meeting in Seoul later this month, will go ahead.
