"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the band?" an inquiry arrives. "My request was to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There is only a single issue: I also longs to be Haim's newest recruit. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile supporters have also coveted the position.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career performing shows at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy nominees.

Like all the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit gang. Their visuals frequently show them striding in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such unfettered exuberance you can't help but think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "It is the biggest honor. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate others to make music."

"And thus all is invited to be the honorary member of Haim."

Historic Nod

The group have called into home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I watch the lists every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the nomination is deeply felt by the band.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant step," continues Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the pioneers that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The album emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that unique liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The words follow endings and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real life who they aspire to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Music

That recent toughness required a new sound – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The trio's candor shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating misadventures.

One man broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Path

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their standing in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an global fan base.

But Haim will forever be their number one priority.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
